Traditional Milanese Lace, Jacquie Tinch

Traditional Milanese is an old Italian part lace characterized by a wide variety of ornamented braids that elegantly curve and scroll to form flowers and leaves.  Working in fine white thread, students will work designs using decorated braids as popularized by Pat Read. The course will enable the student to understand and master the basic techniques and apply skills to different situations and patterns. Jacquie will show you how to adapt the braids to fit your design and also introduce you to some newly researched braids and fillings.

PREREQUISITES: Students must have good bobbin lace fundamentals.

Self taught in the late 1970’s Jacquie furthered her studies with Pat Read and other leading UK teachers.  Jacquie has been teaching lacemaking since 1985.  she teaches many different bobbin lace techniques, but Milanese remains her preference.  Jacquie has designs published in two books by Pat Read.  Her “dragon” won the Individuals’ Trophy in the 2004 Lace Guild ‘Myth or Mystery’ competition.

Armenian Knotted Lace and  Bibilla  Flowers, Elena Dickson

This course has been designed to give students new to Knotted Lace a basic knowledge of the craft.  New students will work samplers to learn techniques that they can apply to the patterns in Elena’s books or other sources.  Students can also choose to make Bibilla flowers. By working a bookmark students will learn the traditional techniques used to work petals, flowers, leaves and buds as well as how to assemble them all together.  Students will start by learning and practicing the double and reverse knots while making pyramid and leaf shapes. From there will make the flower.

PREREQUISITES: None

Born in Athens Greece to a Greek mother and Scottish father Elena lived in Scotland for 13 years until her family migrated to South Australia in 1959 where she currently resides when she is not travelling.  Elena holds a degree from the Adelaide College of Advanced Education (University of South Australia) and has been teaching Knotted (Armenian) Lace since 1985 worldwide.  She has written Knotted Lace in the Eastern Mediterranean Tradition and Mediterranean Knotted Lace in 2005.  Elena has taught throughout Australia and the United States.  Elena has board interests and hobbies that includes numerous other textile traditions.

Bucks Point for all Levels
Holly Van Sciver

Bucks Point is an English bobbin lace derivative of the point ground family of laces.  It is characterized by a delicate ground and a pattern outlined by a gimp thread.  Beginning students will learn point ground, the catch pin, moving the gimp, honeycomb ground, picots, headside and footside techniques.  Intermediate students will learn to apply the basic skills to increasingly more difficult patterns while learning additional skills including honeycomb ground.  Advanced students can select from a wide range of patterns including florals at varying degrees of difficulty.  Students should indicate whether their level in Bucks point is beginner, intermediate or advanced.  This course will introduce many new patterns designed by Holly at all levels.

PREREQUISITES: Students must have good bobbin lace fundamentals.

Holly has been a student and teacher of lacemaking for over 37 years. Originally trained in England, she specializes in teaching the 19th century English laces. She has taught and lectured in the United States, Canada and Europe for the International Old Lacers, regional lace guilds, national lace conferences, museums, historical societies, universities and professional organizations. Holly is a leader in teaching the fundamentals underlying lacemaking theory and design. She is the founder of the Finger Lakes Lace Guild and owner of Van Sciver Bobbin Lace, which has served to promote lacemaking worldwide since 1981.

Repeating Patterns in Contemporary Lace
Jane Atkinson

This course aims to initiate students into the design of Torchon patterns that repeat like wallpaper – side-to-side and end-to-end.  These may be joined or cut to make scarves, hangings, panels, curtains, belts or what-you-will.  Participants will also learn to evaluate threads for different projects and plan interesting colour interpretations.  All levels are welcome.

PREREQUISITES: Students should ideally possess a basic knowledge of Torchon lace techniques.  No design experience is necessary.

Jane Atkinson has been designing, exhibiting, experimenting with and teaching Contemporary Lace for more than 25 years, in the UK and     internationally.  She has written two books and published many patterns, and participates in lace festivals across Europe.

Traditional Binche Lace for All Levels
Annick Staes

Binche is a lace made continuously with lavish designs, the finest threads, and a rich assortment of stitch work.  It is made with snowflakes in all varieties and five-hole backgrounds.  From the 18th century a wreath of square tallies and a whole stitch ring that surrounds the motifs appear.  Binche, in a form known as Point de Fée, is made without a gimp and has a transparent and special look.  Students can choose to start at the beginning.  Continuing Binche students should consult with the instructor beforehand or bring any pattern from other books on Binche along with a technical drawing for explanations and tips.

PREREQUISITES: Knowledge of Flanders and the ability to read a diagram. Some knowledge of Valenciennes is good, but not essential.

Born in Bruges, Belgium in 1966 Annick Staes.  She started her lace instruction at the Kant Centrum at the age of thirteen and after     eight years received her diploma.  She continued her studies in the English laces with Margaret Power.  Bringing a truly interdisciplinary     knowledge to her lace instruction, Annick has several books and pattern folios on numerous laces that includes the Flemish straight     laces, Bloomwork, Duchesse, Torchon, Cluny and Russian.

Torchon With Fine Threads, Kathy Kauffmann

This course provides the beginning lacemaker an opportunity to hone their skills with finer threads, color and metallics through the use of familiar stitches on a smaller grid.  Pattern choices will include handkerchief edgings and bookmarks.  Among the pattern choices will be designs with enough challenge to hold the interest of the lacemaker who wishes to brush up on their skills.  Continuing Flanders students will be welcome.

PREREQUISITES: Beginning Bobbin Lace Skills

Kathy Kauffmann has been making lace for more than 30 years and has been teaching for more than 25 years.  She started her studies as well as her teaching career at Le Centre d’Enseignement de la Dentelle in Paris.  She has studied many kinds of lace, including Withof, Flanders, Honiton, Binche and many others.  Over the past several years she has been concentrating on Flanders and Binche.  Lace has become a very important part of her life.  Kathy is a past-president of OIDFA and co-author of Flanders and Withof in North America.  She has taught at Ithaca and IOLI as well as for various lace groups around the country and Canada.

Withof, and More, Susie Johnson

More fun than you might think, Withof is an exciting contemporary lace characterized by fine threads, rolled edges, and light and shadow in highly stylized motifs. This extraordinary lace evolved from Sr Judith’s Sluis Duchesse roots to become a unique lace which can reflect the personality of each lacemaker.  Lacemakers have begun to incorporate Withof techniques into their own designs, something that students in this class would be welcome to do. Students wishing to continue a different project or lace from a previous class will also be welcome. Other projects upon request.

PREREQUISITES:
Fundamental bobbin lace skills

Susie studied Withof for many years with Jeannet van Oord, both in the US and the Netherlands, mastering the new techniques as the lace evolved. Her work and understanding of the lace has earned her a Withof teacher's certificate from Sr. Judith, with whom she studied in the Netherlands. Her Withof has been on exhibition in several countries, including the OIDFA conference in the Netherlands. She has been making lace since 1981 and teaching for over 20 years, including teaching a variety of laces at IOLI conventions, the Winter Lace Conference, and the Finger Lakes Lace Days in Ithaca. She has been working as the co-coordinator of the International Poppy Project, a study project of one pattern worked in different laces.

Introduction To Bobbin Lacemaking, Jean Jagendorf

Beginning students will learn the lace language and practice several stitches in a traditional sample tape. Those stitches will then be used to complete a simple motif ~ a "lace bobbin"~ an original design for this course. All students will receive a complimentary booklet to keep as a background reference for further study in traditional lace classes or for creative exploration with contemporary fiber art designs. Materials for the Sat/Sun workshop will be provided by the FLLG with the option to buy the kit at the end of the workshop. This course is being subsidized by the Finger Lakes Lace Guild allowing for a reduced rate of $65.00 for a two-day workshop including the Friday reception, all Saturday activities and Sunday brunch. An optional Monday extension of this class, for an additional $50.00, will use a "leaf circle motif" to cover lace sewings, turning stitches, a backstitch variation, adding a gimp thread, and holes in a trail. Saturday/Sunday registration is required to take this extension class.

PREREQUISITES: None
